I find it incredible that Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote this marvellous work when he was only 16. By this time he had already composed 12 string symphonies, a symphony for full orchestra and a number of chamber works. All this despite the fact that his parents, while recognising his talent, did not want to push him.

Yet another composer whose life was cut too short, Mendelssohn died at 38 in Leipzig after a series of strokes.
