The Merseybeats: It’s Love that Really Counts

Square

This was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and first recorded in 1962 by the Shirelles. I love most of their records but this one is dreadful. The orchestration is ghastly and the singing is out of tune. It reached No 36 in America. In Britain it was released as the B-side of Stop the Music, which did not make the chart.

The Merseybeats recorded it a year later, in 1963, and although it sounds pretty amateur it was an improvement on the Shirelles. At least they managed to find some sort of tune, although I don’t think it was one of B and D’s finest. It reached No 24 in Britain. I don’t think it was released in the US.
