This was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King and first released by Maxine Brown in 1964. It reached No 24 in the States in early 1965. I don’t think she made the most of this powerful song.
Manfred Mann took it to No 11 in Britain in 1965. I liked Paul Jones’s voice but not the group. I always found something sterile about them.
I much prefer Rod Stewart’s 1973 version, which reached No 6 in Britain and No 59 in America.
