To coincide with the publication of my article https://am-records.com/2022/05/15/how-i-made-a-beatles-album-with-a-little-help-from-my-friends/ about the Beatles tapes I recorded in 1963, I thought I would do a short season of my favourite tracks from Pop Go the Beatles which were used on the 1974 Live at the BBC album.
This is from the programme of August 6, 1963. The soloist is George Harrison.

The group performed it at their unsuccessful Decca audition on January 1, 1962.
They never recorded it for release.
The song was written by Buddy Holly, and three recordings exist.
This is his solo home recording made on December 14, 1958.

After Holly’s death two months later on February 3, 1959, record producer Jack Hansen augmented the track with singers and musicians in an attempt to replicate the sound of Holly and the Crickets. It was released as his first posthumous single in a double-A side with Peggy Sue Got Married, on July 20, 1959 in America and on August 28, 1959 in Britain.It seems incredible but it didn’t make the charts in either country.

In 1964 Holly’s manager, Norman Petty, recorded another version with The Fireballs as the backing group. I don’t think it’s much good, and I can’t find any chart information.
