Them: Here Comes the Night

Square

Written by Bert Berns (co-writer of Twist and Shout), this was the group’s biggest hit. It was recorded in October 1964 with Jimmy Page on guitar, and was expected to be released as a follow up to Baby Please Don’t Go, which was recorded at the same session. However their label Decca rush-released a version of Here Comes the Night by Lulu on her 16th birthday on November 3. It only got to No 50 in the UK. I’m amazed it did that well. Another terrible decision from the label that turned down the Beatles.

Them’s version was released in March 1965 and got to No 2 in the UK and No 24 in America.

Here is a live performance from 1965.

In 1965 the Exciters did a variation called There They Go. I think this is great.

David Bowie covered it for his 1973 album Pin Ups.
