Simon and Garfunkel: America

Square

This was written by Paul Simon and appeared on the duo’s fourth studio album Bookends, released in 1968.

It was released as the B-side of the single For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her (live version) in 1972, which reached No 53 in America. Later that year it was switched to the A-side and entered the charts in its own right, reaching No 25 in Britain and No 97 in the US.

Here is their performance at the 1981 Concert in Central Park.

It was covered by Bert Sommer on his 1970 album Inside Bert Sommer.

David Bowie performed it to open The Concert for New York City in October 2001. This is a different recording but I think it’s quite similar.

Yes ruined it at length on the 1972 sampler album The New Age of Atlantic.
