Amen Corner: Let the Good Times Roll and Feel So Good

Square

This was written by Leonard Lee, half of Shirley (Goodman, later Pixley) and Lee. It was released in 1956 and went to No 20 in America.

They re-recorded it at a faster tempo in 1960, but I’m afraid Shirley sounds like Alvin the Chipmunk. It’s a disaster. It reached No 47 in America.

I’m a big fan of the Searchers but this 1965 recording for their fourth album Sounds Like Searchers is tame.

And so to Amen Corner, whose version was recorded in 1968 and released on Deram in February 1969 but withdrawn almost at once, probably because the group had signed to Immediate. It’s shame because I think it really does justice to the number. The B-side was their terrific track Love Me Tender, which I have already written about.
