This was written by Crickets drummer Jerry Allison and producer Norman Petty, though Holly’s name was added to the credits after his death in 1959. It was recorded on June 29 and July 1, 1957, and released on September 20, 1957. The B-side was Everyday. It got to No 3 in America and No 6 in Britain. It is 194 on Rolling Stone‘s 2004 ‘500 Greatest Songs of All Time’.

This is a live performance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1957.

John Lennon recorded it in 1974 for his 1975 album Rock ‘n‘ Roll.

The Beach Boys released it as a single in 1978. It got to No 59 in America.
