Joe Cocker: I’ll Cry Instead

Square

Thanks to Andy Marshall for reminding me of this.

It was written by John Lennon (credited to Lennon-McCartney) for the Beatles’ film A Hard Day’s Night. Although ultimately not used in the British version of the film it was released on the A Hard Day’s Night album in July 1964 with other unused material intended for the film. It was kept in the US version of the film and released as a single there the same month, reaching No 22.

In 1964 (I am not sure of the month) Joe Cocker, then aged 20, released the song as his debut single with Jimmy Page and Big Jim Sullivan in the backing group. Despite this illustrious support, it failed to make the charts.
