This was written by the group’s co-founders Bob Geldof and Johnnie Fingers and refers to the 1979 Cleveland Elementary School shooting in San Diego, when 16-year-old Brenda Spencer killed two and injured nine. Asked why she had done it, Spencer reportedly replied: ‘I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day.’ It was released that year and reached No 1 in Britain but managed only No 73 in the States. Possibly it was seen as bad taste there.
