Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich: The Wreck Of The Antoinette

This always seemed to me an odd topic for a pop song but it’s very catchy. The Antoinette was a real ship which sank in 1895, though all the crew survived. The song, in which the crewman narrator drowns, was written by Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley and was the group’s last Top 20 hit, reaching No 14 in Britain in 1968.

  1. Remember meeting Dave Dee and the band at a party with Ken and Alan at their flat in Swiss Cottage. We were under Ken and Alan’s management and recorded one of their songs, we were called Alan Dean’s Problems, the song was, Thunder and Rain, sank with almost no trace, the Joe Meek sound was past it’s sell by date, but he did have a very pretty boy serving coffee, happy days.
