Jimi Hendrix Experience: Voodoo Chile

Square

Probably the greatest rock track ever, (in my humble opinion) in a live 1970 performance. Never fails to raise the goosebumps.

  1. Yes it is probably the greatest rock single. So powerful and so original are the sounds Jimi makes from those six strings; truly a genius. Genius not just in the playing, but in the lyrics which match the music: “I’m standing next to a mountain and I chop it down with the edge of my hand”.

It was a jukebox favourite in a pub I used to frequent, one of those places with a loud rock jukebox. “Voodoo Chile” and the Doors’ “L.A. Woman” used to set the mood. I spent many happy ten pence pieces on those two.

Who can forget the use of the song in “Withnail and I”, accompanying the dissolute pair on their drive back to London?

AND it was a Number 1 hit pop pickers! The heaviest record ever to have topped the charts; unimaginable now. Housewife’s choice.
