This was written by Pat Ballard and released in 1954 by the Four Aces, who got to No 9 in both America and Britain . . .

 . . . and by the Chordettes, who topped the US charts and reached No 11 in Britain. I prefer their version.

  1. Wonderful starry-smooth sounds from the optimistic American 1950s. I prefer the Chordettes version too, and it’s nice to see glamorous women without the uglifying tattoos or plastic surgery which they all seem to require nowadays.

    I don’t think the Chordettes would’ve got very far with Liberace, whom they mention in the song.

    “Lollipop” is the only other Chordettes song I know. On this clip, the Chordette on the left looks like Betty Turpin (Betty Driver). I think it’s Andy Williams doing the pops:
