  1. That’s a great clip, and it shows up one particular very important difference between the original rockers and their 70s equivalent: style.

    Chuck and his contemporaries were elegant and well-dressed. Style in clothes and dressing were all of a piece in early rock and roll. From the mid-60s onward scruffy was the in-thing. Now it is compulsory! Chuck looks the best on stage there; the other players look like stage hands rather than the stars they actually are.

    Here is one of my favourite Chuck Berry clips, filmed in France, although some say Belgium. Well-dressed Chuck in front of a well-dressed, restrained and sophisticated audience. The collapsing mike-stand is a golden moment in rock history.
