Cliff Richard and the Drifters: Living Doll

Square

This was written by Lionel Bart for the 1959 film Serious Charge. Here is the scene from the film.

It was re-recorded in a different arrangement as a single which was released in July 1959. It was Cliff’s first UK No 1 and was the best-selling record of the year. It was also his first US hit, reaching No 30.

Cliff sang it at the 1960 Royal Variety Performance, but the Drifters (by then the Shadows) don’t seem to have been in attendance.

  1. The clean fresh air of British pop music of the early 1960s.
