Arthur Alexander: A Shot of Rhythm and Blues

Square

This was written by Terry Thompson and released as the B-side of You Better Move On, in the States in 1961 and in the UK in 1962.

Johnny Kidd and the Pirates made a mess of it in 1962. All I can find out is that it got to the lower reaches of the charts.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6q1991dwRA

Gerry and the Pacemakers did a creditable version on their 1963 debut album, How Do You Like It.

The Beatles performed it on their show Pop Go The Beatles in August 1963, and it was included on the 1994 album Live at the BBC. I think this is among the best of their recordings. Better than Maxwell’s Silver Hammer at any rate.

Dave Edmunds did it on his 1975 album Subtle as a Flying Mallet.
