The Rubettes: Sugar Baby Love

Square

This is a bit after my time but it is such a brilliant pop song that I am making an exception. It was written by Wayne Bickerton and Tony Waddington and recorded in autumn 1973 when the Rubettes were still being assembled. The falsetto lead was sung by Paul Da Vinci but in the event he did not join the group, so when the record was released in January 1974 Alan Williams mimed to the track. It was the group’s first single and it was their only No 1. It got to No 30 in America, their only top 40 hit there.
