Written by Pete Townshend. A short version (3’ 35”) was released as a single in June 1971, reaching No 9 in the UK charts and No 15 in the US.
The full eight-and-a-half-minute version appears as the final track on the band’s album Who’s Next, released that August.
On May 25, 1978, this was the last number Keith Moon played live with the band at Shepperton Studios. He was found dead on September 7, having taken an overdose of a prescription sedative intended to alleviate his alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
