Small Faces: Whatcha Gonna Do About It

Square

This was the group’s debut single released in the UK on 6 August 1965. It reached No 14. Group members Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane derived the tune from Solomon Burke’s hit Everybody Needs Somebody to Love. Their manager, Don Arden, brought in Ian Samwell and Brian Potter to write the lyrics.

This is a live performance from 1966.

This is an earlier recording which was ditched in favour of the 1965 release.

  1. Don Arden; what a crook!

Have you heard the Small Faces version of Del Shannon’s “Runaway”?

It’s a bit ramshackle but very rocking, and the operatic voice you hear at the beginning is Don Arden, who had been a singer in his day.
