Bobby Vee: Take Good Care of My Baby

Written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, this was a No 1 hit on both sides of the Atlantic in 1961.

Vee re-recorded it as a ballad in 1972 under his real name, Robert Thomas Velline, on his album Ain’t Nothing Like a Sunny Day. It was released as a single in 1973 but did not make the charts.

The first version to be recorded was by Dion but it was released afterBobby Vee’s hit on his November 1961 album Runaround Sue. I think this is just as good as Vee.

The Beatles performed it at their unsuccessful Decca audition in 1962, with George Harrison on vocals. What were Decca thinking of? This is miles better than a lot of their later stuff.

Bobby Vinton did a version in 1968 and although it was pretty poor it got to No 33 in America.
