Roy Orbison: Only the Lonely


This was the great Roy’s first big hit, reaching No 2 in the States in 1960 and No 1 in Britain. It was co-written by Orbison and Joe Melson, a long-time collaborator. They tried to sell it to Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers but it was turned down.

Here is a live performance from 1965, showcasing the way Orbison hardly opened his mouth when he sang.
