Carole King: It Might as Well Rain Until September

Square

This was written in 1962 by Carole King and Gerry Goffin for Bobby Vee as a follow-up to their Take Good Care of My Baby, which was a No 1 for him. King recorded a demo of the song but Vee’s management did not want it as a single, so Dimension Records released King’s demo version. It made No 22 in the States and No 3 in Britain.

Bobby Vee recorded the song the same year for his 1963 Liberty album The Night Has a Thousand Eyes. Good job he didn’t do it as a single because it is not nearly as good as King’s.

Helen Shapiro recorded the song for her 1964 album Helen Hits Out, when she was 18.
