Gabriel Fauré: In Paradisum

I first heard this in 1998 at St Bride’s, Fleet Street. It was the funeral of the great former Daily Mail editor Sir David English, who was ten times the man his successor proved to be.

This is the final part of Fauré’s Requiem, written between 1887 and 1890 and premiered in its first version in 1888.

It is based on a text that is not part of the liturgy of the funeral mass but of the burial.
