One of Motown’s biggest hits, this was written by Marvin Gaye, William ‘Mickey’ Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter and released in 1964 by Martha and the Vandellas. It reached No 2 in the US and No 4 in Britain.
In 1985 David Bowie and Mick Jagger recorded a duet version to raise money for Live Aid. It reached No 1 in the UK and No 7 in the US.
I have included this 1966 effort by the awful Mamas and Papas for its amusement value.
