THIS was written by Jim Capaldi and Steve Winwood, founding members of Traffic, and released on the band’s Mr Fantasy debut album in 1967. It was issued as a single in 1968 and reached No 40 in the chart.
I am a huge fan of Steve Winwood’s voice and I think it is at its best in this beautiful melody (though I think the psychedelia-influenced middle 8 could have been improved). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azf7OUdfjDg
Capaldi was Traffic’s drummer but he was no mean singer too, as you can hear in this rehearsal take.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FyNElzc4ng
Pete Townshend did it at the Roundhouse in London in 1974, I think without the rest of The Who.
I like this version by Bryan Ferry on his 2010 album Olympia.
Jim Capaldi died in 2005 at 60. Two years later in a tribute event at the Roundhouse, Pete Townshend gave No Face No Name No Number a bit more of a Who flavour than in his 1974 performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3V8Qa0qKrr4
