I am ashamed to admit that until I looked it up I did not know the Beatles recorded this song by Mitch Murray in 1962, before Gerry and the Pacemakers. Apparently it was close to being released as their first single but Love Me Do, recorded at the same session, was chosen instead. Good decision – the Beatles version is not much good.
Gerry and the Pacemakers recorded and released it in 1963 as their debut single and it went to No 1. It did nothing in America on first release, but reissued in 1964 it reached No 9.
