Berry wrote this song, recorded it in December 1957 and released it in January 1958. It reached No 2 in America and No 16 in Britain.
He had already used the tune in The Little Girl From Central in 1955.
In 1963 Brian Wilson lifted the tune for the Beach Boys’ Surfin’ USA. Eventually they gave the copyright to Berry’s publisher Arc Records, and it is now credited to Berry and Wilson.
The Beatles recorded the song once for the Pop Go The Beatles radio show in 1963. It was released on the album Live at the BBC in 1994.
John Lennon recorded it in 1973 with Phil Spector producing. It was released on his 1975 album Rock ‘n’ Roll.
