Written by Crickets members Sonny Curtis and Jerry Allison, this was recorded soon after Buddy Holly’s death in February 1959 but not released until April 1960 in Britain and May 1960 in the US. It got to No 26 in Britain but did nothing in the States.
Bobby Vee released it the following year, reaching No 61 in America. In Britain it was the B-side of Stayin’ In but reached No 4 on its own account.
In 1980 Leo Sayer took the song to No 2 in both America and Britain.
I think Bobby Vee’s is the best (and the definitive) version.
Leo Sayer was a great performer, quite often unfairly criticised over the years.
