Buddy Holly: Listen to Me

Square

It is hard to find details about this great song. It was written by Holly and his manager Norman Petty and released in 1958 as the B-side to I’m Gonna Love You Too, which sank without trace.

I don’t know what they were thinking of since it is clearly vastly superior to I’m Gonna Love You Too, which you can hear here:

The Searchers did a pretty good version on their 1963 so-called live album Sweets For My Sweet – The Searchers Live at the Star Club Hamburg, which was mainly studio tracks.

It was covered by Brian Wilson on the 2011 Buddy Holly tribute album entitled Listen to Me but although it used to be on YouTube the track has disappeared.

  1. “Listen To Me” is a simple, but brilliant song, as were all of Buddy Holly’s songs. “I’m Gonna Love You Too” has a similar structure to “Oh Boy” but is still a magical moment captured on tape.
