Elvis Presley: Crying in the Chapel

Square

This was written by Artie Glenn for his son Darrell Glenn. It was released in June 1953 and topped the Cash Box chart.

The Orioles recorded this great doo-wop version the same month, and took it to No 11 in America.

The King recorded it on October 31, 1960, but apparently he and the Jordanaires were not satisfied with it. It was not released until April 1965, when it became his biggest hit for six years. It reached No 3 in the States and No 1 in Britain.

Bob Marley & the Wailers adapted the lyrics and recorded it as Selassie Is the Chapel in April 1968. Only a few hundred copies were pressed at the time but it was released in 1997 on the Complete Bob Marley & the Wailers 1967 to 1972.
