First recorded by the Four Seasons, this was written by the group’s backing vocalist Bob Gaudio and his long-time writing associate Bob Crewe. It was released in 1964 as the B-side of the Four Seasons’ Rag Doll (which reached No 1 in the States and No 2 in Britain). It’s a bit heavy on the harp for me, and I am not a Valli fan.
The Tremeloes (formerly Brian Poole and the Tremeloes, but Poole departed in 1966) recorded it in 1967, using the Four Seasons’ arrangement. It was their most successful single, topping the charts in Britain and getting to No 11 in the US.
Here is a live performance.
