This was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It was recorded by the Rolling Stones in 1966, and released in January 1967. It was the group’s fourth chart-topper in the United States and reached number three in the United Kingdom as a double A-side with Let’s Spend the Night Together. To me it exposes Jagger’s inadequacy as a singer of tunes.
I much prefer Melanie Safka’s version from her 1970 album Candles in the Rain. It reached No 9 in the UK and No 52 on the US Billboard chart.
“Ruby Tuesday” is a great song to start with but Melanie’s version tops it. Powerful, haunting and beautiful, it’s possibly the only cover of a Stones that is preferable to the original.
This is a good Stones cover….
