Mrs Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter

Square

There is no satisfactory version of this but it’s a terrific song. It was written by Trevor Peacock, a noted 1960s songwriter now better known for playing Jim Trott in the BBC comedy series The Vicar of Dibley. He also wrote That’s What Love Will Do recorded by Joe Brown and the Bruvvers.

It was originally sung by actor Tom Courtenay in The Lads, a British TV play of 1963, and released as a single on Decca. Trouble is that he couldn’t really sing, and he has a dreadful faux Cockney accent. I don’t think it made the charts.

In 1965 it was released by Herman’s Hermits, who took it to No 1 in the States. It was not released as a single in Britain. Another poor singer and some sort of hybrid accent meant this version was pretty bad too, but I still think someone could have done it justice.
