Written by Jerry Ragovoy (who also wrote Stay With Me Baby) and Bert Berns (who wrote Twist and Shout), this was first recorded by Erma Franklin, older sister of Aretha, in 1967. It reached No 62 in the US. It was re-released in Britain 1992 after featuring in an advert for Levi’s jeans, and got to No 9 here.
It was released in 1968 by Big Brother and the Holding Company with lead singer Janis Joplin, and reached No 12 in the US. I really, really do not like Janis Joplin and I think she murders it. Apparently Erma Franklin said she didn’t recognise it when she first heard on the radio, and I am not surprised.
