Vivaldi’s Gloria

  • Antonio Vivaldi (4 March 1678 – 28 July 1741) was born in Venice. He is thought to have written two settings of Gloria in Excelsis Deo, a set of 12 movements, the words of which probably date from the 4th century, while he was a priest at The Ospedale della Pietà, a convent and music school in Venice. It was established as a home for orphans and abandoned girls in the 14th century and by Vivaldi’s time it was well known for its all-female musical ensembles which brought in tourists and patrons from around Europe. This Gloria is the first movement of Gloria in excelsis Deo RV 589 and is the better known.  Here is the score with the John Alldis Choir and English Chamber Orchestra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ICW_iZcti4&list=FLfL9CgLdJ-Ixb2aXDoegmHQ&index=21&t=34s  And here is Trevor Pinnock directing The English Concert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQx2TWgxX14
